Overlap Between Industrial Niching and Workplace Segregation: Role of Immigration Policy, Culture and Country of Origin

This article focuses on two dimensions of labour market integration, sorting into different industries (niching) and workplace establishments (segregation) by share migrant workers. We seek to understand what degree these immigrants’ lack integration—niching segregation—overlap with each other. The study is based Finnish individual, panel relational registry data, we focus the three largest immigrant groups—Estonians, Russians Swedes—who have arrived from countries wealth levels Helsinki metropolitan area. By applying generalised structural equation modelling, estimate industrial niching segregation—measured as a overconcentration immigrants in particular establishments, respectively—jointly. Our main findings show strong overlap between segregation for all ethnic groups. Segregation are highest among Estonians, but very similar Swedes. These do not support cultural similarity argument integration. Rather, immigration policy origin country level may be determinant. Additionally, found that females more likely than males employed simultaneously niched segregated supporting thesis gender-based networks.
